UPDATED 03/16/06: Fixed the problem with "black water" in the latest builds of darkplaces. I also added a great deal of cubemaps to certain levels, and plan to do more in the future.

Note from the author:

It took me 3 years to perfect this, 3 years and countless builds of .rtlights, until I could get ID1 looking in real-time the way I think Id would have done it if the technology had existed then. So here it is.

If you have followed my project then you will notice some differences from my previous .rtlights, these mainly include the use of cubemaps and a totally reorganized color scheme. There are quite a few other things you will probably notice especially in terms of changes. If you haven't been following my project, then you are in for a real treat, this is Quake in real-time, bringing it to par, at least in terms of lighting and shadow play, with Doom 3.

There are few things .rtlights can't do that Doom 3 can, such as moving lights. However, Quake has no moving lights in stock. With a totally revamped texture set with bump/gloss/norm maps as well as md3 models, this is a huge step in the total re-creation of Quake to bring it up to date. The nice part is these .rtlights will continue to work with new versions of Darkplaces as well as any textures/models that you find or create.

This is the final build, I am nicknaming this "perfected" .rtlights because I did much more than simply just go in and light things, I edited the actual files and cleaned up any strange number errors that occurred. I wanted everything to be right this time; I didn't stop working on a map until I was 100% satisfied. I hope you can tell the difference.

HOW TO INSTALL:

1. Extract ID1.zip to your quake/id1 folder

2. When completed your ID1 folder should have a /maps folder and a /cubemaps folder

3. Once in Darkplaces go to the console and type in r_shadow_realtime_world 1 (it is also available on the Video Options menu in Darkplaces under real-time lighting)

TIPS:

If you find it to dark dont be afraid to tweak your gamma and brightness settings in the color settings menu in darkplaces, you'd be surprised what a few changes can do.

If you find it running slow turn off real-time dlights or make the playable screen smaller by using the - key, the best way to increase performance is to lower resolution, it still looks damn good at 640x480x32, I promise.

Defragment your hard drive; get rid of spyware; the normal things one does to improve performance.

The Quake Community (which probably includes anyone reading this) for being dedicated to such a great and classic game, I hope you enjoy running through the original Quake with these new lights, its quite a blast.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

These have risen slightly since I started working on .rtlights, namely because the detail I've put in has increased. So as where my first attempt could run on a PIII 450 with a GF3 these would have a hard time doing so. The minimum system requirements are as follows:

Processor: Pentium III 733
Ram: 256 MB
Video Card: Geforce 3 era card

Tested and playable at 640x480x32

Recommended system requirements:

Processor: Athlon XP/Pentium 4 2.4/2400+ or better
Ram: 512 MB
Video Card: Radeon 9xxx series, Radeon X8xx series, Radeon x1xxx series, Geforce 4 series, Geforce 5* series, Geforce 6 series, Geforce 7 series

Tested and playable anywhere from 640x480x32 to 1280x1024x32**

*The Geforce 5xxx series has many known performance problems with .rtlights, the 52xx and 55xx series are not playable unless you run at 320x240x32, the lowest Geforce 5 series card that can play respectably is the 56xx series or above

**resolution is highly limited by your video card

What it takes to run .rtlights with hi res textures at 1600x1200x32 with 4xAA and 8xAF at playable frame rates (19-30fps min):

Athlon XP 3000+/Athlon 64 2800+/Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
1 GB of RAM
Geforce 6800 Ultra series or better video card

Tested on Athlon 64 3000+ with Geforce 6800 Ultra and 1Gig of ram
